MARVEL Studios Avengers ‘experiment’ has to be one of the greatest movie successes of film history. The risks they took bringing Iron Man, Thor and Captain America to the silver screen and then throwing them together in one epic movie paid off BIG TIME! With Thor’s latest adventure ‘Thor: The Dark World’ out this week, i thought it right to summarise what we’ve seen so far and what is yet to come for our superheroes.
Marvel plans on expanding it’s cinematic universe (MCU) slowly but surely in phases, with new characters but still keeping a huge focus on pre-existing ones like Iron Man, Thor & Captain America. At the moment we are half way through Phase Two, so far they have played out like this..
- Iron Man
- Iron Man 2
- Captain America
- The Avengers / Avengers Assemble
- Iron Man 3
- Thor: The Dark World
- Captain America: The Winter Solider
- The Guardians of the Galaxy
- The Avengers: Age of Ultron
So lets look at how our heroes circumstances have changed throughout Phase Two thus far.
For me Iron Man 3 was a bit of a disappointment, despite getting a billion at the Box Office i felt it didn’t deserve it and only made so much because it was the first film to follow off of The Avengers – Despite this i still think Robert Downey Jr and the character of Tony Stark he has created is PERFECT!
Iron Man 3 concluded with Tony Stark not only destroying his suits but also having that piece of shrapnel that made him owe so unique from his chest – yes that very same piece of shrapnel we was told could NOT be removed in the first and second movie. This doesn’t leave much space for a standalone sequel for Iron Man but the new Avengers should hopefully give us more clarity on the character.
Rumours on the web regarding of Age of Ultron are to be believed it will be Stark who creates the android villain, which while not in line with the comic book storyline (Ant Man creating Ultron) it does give Stark’s character purpose to don the suit once more.
When the credits roll on Avengers 2 and Ultron has presumable caused Earth a HUGE amount of stress, it would make sense if Stark blamed himself and spiralled out of control, which would set him up for the characters infamous tale, ‘Demon in a Bottle’. This would make a good plot line for an Iron Man 4 and would also provide a stage from which Sam Rockwell could return as Justin Hammer.
Captain America is probably the least successful of the three new franchises established in Phase One, nevertheless the film was pivotal in the build up to The Avengers storyline. The sequel entitled ‘Captain America: The Winter Solider’ will see the addition of Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and focus heavily on SHIELD’s activities following the events in New York (from Avengers).
Seeing as the Cap is so die hard loyal to the USA and its principles it would be good to see him go against the government or its corruption? Certainly add a lot of excitement for a third movie.
Thors future depends entirely on the fate of his devious brother Loki in ‘The Dark World’ (you’ll have to see it to find out – BTW it is a BRILLIANT film). If he survives then he would most definitely play a pivotal part in a third Thor movie – particularly given the character’s popularity amongst fans – regardless of his villainous ways he is a HUGE FAVOURITE.
If not i’m sure there are other villains that can be brought up from the depths of the Nine Realms.. Also it has to be said that it is brilliant to see somewhere so local, aka London & Greenwich used as the epic final battle location of Thor!
Hulk is a tricky one, his films have failed to catch as wide an audience as the others but Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in Joss Whedon’s Avengers was one of the best parts of the film. Marvel are still hesitant however and so for now at least there are no plans to create another film, although it will almost certainly be done in the near future (Marvel Phase Three?).
He has a ton of villains yet to make their way to the big screen, most notably The Leader whose origin was covered in the 2008 film when Tim Blake Nelson’s character came into contact with some gamma-radiated super-juice. However I’d take a look at the current “Indestructible Hulk” run of comics for the premise at least.
Guardians of the Galaxy
This is easily Marvels craziest film yet and HUGE gamble in my opinion. How ever in Marvels Phase plan Guardians of the Galaxy are of EXTREME importance for one core reason – Thanos, the crazed Titan seen at the end of Avengers Assemble credit scene. He will surely play a large part in the build up of Avengers 2.
The story will focus around the Infinity Gauntlet, which holds six Infinity Gems that when held at once affords its wielder control over all of reality – of course this means Thanos wants it.
So who is left.. Avengers: Age of Ultron will introduce us to two new characters, Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver. Further additions to the Marvel film universe will be Ant-Man the film being directed by Edgar Wright and in pre-production for a 2015 release. With Edgar Wright at the helm it seems ‘Ant-Man’ will be closer to a comedy than any Marvel film before it, and it is rumoured the film may be a heist movie as well.
With the Ultron part out of the equation (it appears he will be Tony Stark’s creation instead), where this Ant-Man movie goes is really anyone’s guess, but in Edgar Wright it would seem to be in capable hands. Plans to bring Doctor Strange and Black Panther into the fold have been pretty much confirmed in recent weeks as well. Doctor Strange would introduce the mystical side to Marvel’s cinematic universe.
Beyond even that there’s the fact that Marvel Studios have regained the rights to the Daredevil and Punisher properties, both of which are likely to be thrown into the mix in the near future.
Whatever happens Marvel Studios are sure to make the journey one hell of a ride, recent rumors even point towards a potential deal whereby Spider-Man and X-Men could be added to future Avenger movies.. WOW!
